Choosing the Right Furniture For Your Outdoor Living Space

Warm weather means that porches, decks and patios become an extension to your home. The first thing to consider is how the outdoor space will be used - will it serve mainly for entertainment or relaxation? You’ll also want to determine how much space you have and what pieces and sizes of furniture you need to transform your space into a usable oasis that meets your needs.

Does the furniture need to be light weight, such as aluminum, plastic, PVC, or wicker, to allow it to be easily moved around and refigured, or will the pieces be in a more permanently positioned setting making heavier materials, such as wood, wrought iron, or steel, suitable?

Although routine washing with warm, soapy water works for maintaining most outdoor furniture, it will likely be exposed to the elements, making durability and weather-ability a critical factor. If you have cushions, materials such as polyester fibers allow water to bead and roll off, keeping the cushions low maintenance.

If your outdoor space is in direct sunlight for a significant part of the day, the fabric will be subject to fading; look for double sided cushions so you are able to flip the cushions periodically and help maintain the true colors – adding an outdoor umbrella or awning will help, while also creating a comfortable, shady retreat during the hottest points of the day.

Blessing of the Inlet – Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

The annual “Blessing of the Inlet” takes place on the first Saturday in May each year at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. This year’s event, the 16th “Blessing of the Inlet” since the idea was first conceived by a Sunday school class, will be on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 9:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon. The centerpiece of the event is the actual “Blessing of the Inlet” Ceremony, which begins at 11:30. It will be given by Reverend Dr. Mike Alexander and Reverend Marty Nason. The event is designed to glorify God and thank Him for all He has done at Murrells Inlet while asking Him to continue blessing the area.

Outside of the actual blessing ceremony, there are a number of other reasons to stop by. There will be more than 60 vendors of arts and crafts at the event, offering everything from paintings to handmade jewelry. A number of local restaurants will also be offering their food at the event, so be sure to try some of their delicious offerings! In addition, there will be a number of events for children, including face painting, hair painting, a climbing wall, inflatables, and a dunk tank. In addition, there will be entertainment for everyone all day long, including gospel choirs, contemporary Christian acts, dance troupes, and more. There is no charge for admission or parking, and the event will be held no matter what the weather brings.

Mortgage and Refi Help On the Way For Homeowners

In today’s economy, foreclosures and short sales seem all too common. There has been a turn-around though, and more help is on the way. Two new housing initiatives recently unveiled by President Obama promise help for Americans who are members of the military or who have government-backed housing loans.

Help is coming in the form of two initiatives. The first reduces the fees for refinancing home mortgages which are insured by the FHA. The federal government currently offers programs allowing homeowners with FHA loans to refinance at a lower interest rate. However, the fees of doing so have kept many homeowners from being able to take advantage of this program. This first initiative reduces the fees, making this program a reasonable option for those who might not otherwise been able to afford it.

The second program provides compensation to military families who have had their homes wrongfully foreclosed upon. The program will provide compensation to any service member for losses incurred due to unlawful foreclosure or being denied refinance. The program also provides $10 million to the VA fund which will help support loans for veterans. This initiative represents a deal with the nation’s largest banks and 49 attorney generals. Coastal Brew Fest – Pawleys Island

On Friday, April 27, 2012, the Coastal Brew Fest will take place at the Litchfield Exchange in Pawleys Island, SC. The event begins at 4:00 in the afternoon and ends at 10:00. Hosted by the Georgetown County, SC Chamber of Commerce, this event is “designed to educate our county on new beers or less recognizable beers from the Carolinas and surrounding areas”. Brewers including Wood Chuck, New South, Brooklyn Brewery, Foothills Brewery and lots more, will be offering samples of a wide variety of beers, including their staple beers, their seasonal beers, and even their more unusual beers. Reps will be on hand to help you learn more about the brews you’ll be sampling as well.

Live music will be provided by two local groups, TJ Walsh and The Foreclosures. Admission is $25, which will get you a souvenir pilsner and the opportunity to taste as many beers as you would like as you explore the grounds of the Litchfield Exchange. Food and other souvenir items will be sold separately. So mark your calendars as this is sure to be an event you won’t want to miss.

Charleston Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1936, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to enriching the cultural base of the Lowcountry and providing unique learning experiences for residents throughout the area. “Diggin’ It” 2012 Spring Garden Festival at Brookgreen Gardens

Calling all avid gardeners and hobbyists! Brookgreen Gardens in nearby Murrells Inlet is hosting “Diggin’ It” 2012 Spring Garden Festival, on March 24, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Brookgreen’s horticultural experts will offer demonstrations, talks and tours, and top-notch advice on gardening. “Diggin’ It” is the place to be to get all the answers and gardening advice you desire to create the first-rate garden and relaxation area you deserve!

On tap for this year’s event are a number of sessions designed to educate and motivate the masses. Included are seminars on the history of gardening, tips for growing plants in the coastal regions of the state, home decoration with plants and candles, and butterfly garden creation. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with Brookgreen gardening experts while gaining valuable insights into coastal gardening and conservation.
