Night of a Thousand Candles
Lighting the way to holiday fun in Litchfield/Pawleys Island
If you want to brighten holiday spirits in the Lowcountry, your perfect choice for the last decade has been Brookgreen Gardens’ Nights of a Thousand Candles in Pawleys Island. Six nights of holiday magic are conjured each year over three consecutive weekends preceding Christmas. Visitors to Brookgreen Gardens during this event enjoy national-class entertainment, delectable food, great company and good cheer.
The magic kicks off around 7 p.m. when patrons enter to find thousands of candles and luminaries lighting garden paths and walkways leading to holiday fun. Delighting the guests, musicians perform, carolers serenade with Christmas classics, and piano concerts pervade the grounds, accented by choral ensembles and theatrical performers. All of this plays out while guests savor everything from Lowcountry entrees to cider and chardonnay over the plantation kitchen’s baked delicacies.
Perfect for holiday revelers ages 9 to 90, Nights of a Thousand Candles shares its enchantment in an idyllic setting. Brookgreen Gardens, a National Historic Landmark and one of the most beautiful places in America, is located along U.S. 17 between Pawleys Island and Myrtle Beach. With 900 sculptures serenely nestled among timeless live oaks, Brookgreen Gardens is the nation’s largest sculpture garden and represents, through both man-made and natural beauty, an unparalleled outdoor theatre for American figurative sculpture—the ideal location for a holiday celebration, too. The candles and luminaries frame in an ethereal way the Gardens’ pools and statuary envisioned and established by Anna Hyatt Huntington and featuring 300 other artists as well as her own work.
Nights of a Thousand Candles, Brookgreen Gardens’ most popular event, celebrates its 12th year in December 2010. For more information, visit http://www.brookgreen.org/ or call (843) 235-6000. Lift your spirits to the light-at Nights of a Thousand Candles.
